It would appear that UPC codes may become a thing of the past. Wal-Mart’s technological leadership is moving into new directions including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Electronic Product Codes (EPCs) and it is requiring its vendors to get up to speed quickly on these established technologies. Alex Daniels reported on a conference called “Emerging Trends in Retailing,” held at the University of Arkansas on October 9, 2003.
At the event, sponsored by the Sam M. Walton College of Business Center for Retailing Excellence, Wal-Mart officials emphasized the importance of suppliers understanding the benefits of Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID. The technology, used for years to track large items such as trucks and livestock, consists of tiny computer chips that allow goods to be followed throughout the manufacturing and distribution process. The promise of RFID, according to Wal-Mart officials and other retail experts, is that costs can be taken out of the distribution process, because the chips can accurately measure when and where goods are shipped, stored and displayed on the retail floor.8
